BMWs need to know when you replace the battery, battery capacity and battery type must be registered! YOU DO NEED TO REGISTER battery replacements on BMWs with an IBS (Intelligent Battery Sensor).

Why register the battery replacement?

After installing a new battery, the service function ‘Register battery replacement’ must be run. The registration of the battery replacement is required to inform the power management (BMW Diagnostic Scanner in engine electronics and intelligent battery sensor) that a new battery was installed in the vehicle. If the battery replacement is not registered, the power management will not function properly and can lead to functions being limited by individual electrical consumers being switched off or having their power consumption reduced. Power management will charge the new battery as if it’s the old worn out battery, causing premature failure of the replacement battery.

Important! If the new battery is not registered, incorrect readings may appear in the display of the on-board computer due to old data in the power management system (check control message ”Recharge battery” appears even though the battery is new).

A service function informs the power management in the Digital Engine Electronics (DME) or the Digital Diesel Electronics (DDE) of a battery replacement. The following operations are performed:

-The current mileage reading is stored for the battery replacement.

-The stored measured values (battery charge statuses, current, voltage, temperature, etc.) are deleted.

-The power management is initialized.

Available registration options:

Replacing battery with exact same type – (Simple registration)
Replacing battery with same type but different capacity – (Registration/Conversion)
Replacing battery with different type – (Programming/Conversion/Registration)
Updating software of complete battery management system

Changes to the charging profile also affects how the Start/Stop system works for vehicles with EfficientDynamics

Car 1:

You’re renewing the battery with identical replacement. You register replacement to let the car know that the battery is new and the charging profile is adjusted accordingly. If you don’t the vehicle will charge for an old battery and cause premature failure.

Car 2:

You fit an AGM in place of a Standard LA battery (or vice versa). If you don’t register the replacement then it will toast the new battery for similar reasons to Car 1 but even worse as the charging profile will be for the incorrect type battery and cause even faster battery failure. In this case you MUST use a ‘conversion’ to change the battery type. Then, register a replacement.

Notice! Determination of state of charge after a battery replacement

After a battery replacement, the vehicle must be left standing for at least 3 hours with its new battery. It is not possible to establish with any reliability the state of charge of the new battery until that time. Possible Check Control messages about total discharge of the battery are then no longer displayed.

Notes for disconnecting and connecting battery

The scope of application of some systems may be restricted after a power supply interruption. Likewise, individual settings may be lost.

Settings or activations must be carried out, depending on the equipment specification. For example:

.Vehicles with automatic engine start?stop function (MSA): MSA function is active only after learning period (vehicle must not be woken for a period of approx. 6 hours

. E46 Perform (four-wheel drive) / E53 / E83: steering angle sensor adjustment

. If necessary, activate slide/tilt sunroof

. If necessary, activate power windows

.If necessary, activate mirror with compass

Only E60, E61, E63, E64, E70, E71, E90, E91, E92, E93: mount steering angle

Skipping the battery registration process can dramatically shorten the life of a battery in these vehicles, be it an AGM or a conventional battery. Several issues can cause premature battery failure, see post on Energy Diagnosis, but on a late model BMW, skipping battery registration can be one of them.

Review 2: I think this is also the scan tool the gentleman from the other thead was referencing to. I havent asked Voicey about it knowing he uses Texa the majority of the time. Basically what you’d need to do a clutch is to be able to write into the NCR (TCU) the new clutch configuration, reset the PIS, and run self learn. If you can do all of that your good as far as the clutch is concerned.

Review 3:  I have a Launch here – it’s firmly at the bottom of the pecking order of diagnostic tools in our workshop.

When I first used it I thought it was a Chinese rip off/clone – that should give you an idea of what it’s like to use. It does have some modules however there are so many revisions during a model run that you need to be lucky that it has the correct software version otherwise it’ll misinform you at best and damage something at worst.

So to give you an idea of the quality of the launch – I did a clutch reading on a Ferrari before I left the workshop. The SD2 was at 44.78%. My other two premium tools were within 0.5% of that figure. The launch was reading 29.85% – way off.

If the Launch X431 was your only tool you’d get into trouble real quickly.

Review 4: On the Launch…it is reading the numbers, but the software is what breaks down all the information…Like Voicey I`m not a fan…I have used one on Jags and Land Rovers and you are constantly F-ing around with the software version.. For example…If you had version 3.0 on your unit and you upgraded to 3.1, you would think it would do all of 3.0 and then some…Not this thing..As far as the clutch wear, it has been discussed on here that number isn`t always very accurate at all if someone didn`t reset it correctly when the clutch was replaced…

Review 5: To be honest, I don’t know very much about Maserati or Ferrari. It’s not just something you can jump into without experience or training ( These make BMW and Mercedes look like Toyota’s ) in any event I was able to plug the Launch into a Maserati and it looked pretty impressive for a throw away tool.. It really does a lot..

Review 6: the scan tool is what interprets the numbers into the algorithm of the clutch wear.

So for instance, if I have a GS in front of me, it will take the closed clutch position and the new closed clutch position. These are the only numbers the NCR provides. The Scan tool is what takes those numbers, subtracts them, divides it from the thickness of a new clutch, multiplies it, and gives you the actual clutch wear. That algorithm is done with the software of the scan tool. So, if that’s off the reading is off, when you write the new parameters into the NCR it will be off, and the PIS will be off. If it misreads the new closed clutch position, with the closed clutch position you have no foundation for the algorithm either.

I can give you an example, I actually did a PPI on a GS about 6 months ago. Well the gentleman selling the car actually took the car to someone I’ve always felt was reputable. So I thought the gentleman selling the car was well to put it lightly embellishing what the actual clutch wear was in order to sell the car. I called the gentleman who did the clutch wear read out, KNOWING there’s no way he misread it. He looked up the data from the receipt and actually confirmed what the guy told me. I was beside myself, but he did read it with the Leo system and the read out was definitely wrong. I double checked my readings, and the algorithm to be sure I read it correctly. My read out was in line with a PPI that was done a year and half earlier by a Maserati dealership using the SD2/3 as well.

My point to this is, even using the Leo he somehow messed up the read out. But that being stated if you had a scan tool that far off to begin with, you don’t want to mess with your car or someone else’s. I’m glad Dave posted this from Aldous because what he is saying is true. If you’re not careful you’ll write something into the NCR that will have a huge impact on the drive-ability of the car. Then once it’s done, how do you get it back to where it was with an inaccurate scan tool? Even with a good OBD2 Scanner, once you write the new closed position in wrong, when you take the accurate scan tool you’ll be guessing at what it should be new. Round and round it will go.

The only way I can know the accuracy of the scan tool is to have it in front of me, someone asked me about it being a Unicorn if it could do what the gentleman said it could. Now that we have data from a reliable source, namely Voicey/J that has done this, I would say, no it’s not a Unicorn. It’s seems to be a good way to comatose the vehicle you are working on. Seems Jason is echoing the same thing with the updates. So, anyway, I’m glad we had guys chimed in on it before someone did mess their car up.

 

 

August 23 How to install GM TECH2 TIS2000 VS VXDIAG Nano VS MDI Sidst udgivet den 23-08-2018

How to install Tech 2 Scan Tool? How to install VXDIAG VCX NANO GM? How to install GM MDI?

Here we go:

ON the VX nano, sometimes you can get Tech2win to run on win 10 (maybe if you have an AMD chip or not, but have not figure that one out yet), while on my i7 machine, Tech 2 win will not run in win 10 instead.
Tech2win is the program that works just like a Tech II, but the program running on a laptop for the MDI (clone MDI device which the Nano is).
GDS2 is the program for the C7, like the tech II and tech2win with midi is for the C6 instead.
On the VM GDS 2 , you don’t need an account with GM to use it, short of needing to do SPS programming, which you will need a TDS SPS subscription instead ($40 for 2 years per car).

So the low down for most laptops,
Wants to be running in win 10 for TDS SPS programming.
Needs to be running a multi core chip in win 7 or above to run VM player for VM GDS2.
Need to be running in Win 7 native (32 or 64 bit) to run Tech2win (will not work in a VM shell).
Tis2000 needs to run in WinXP or built vmXP shell, so it can be native in XP or in a VM shell so long as you have a multicore processor.

So the way I do it, since Tech2win will not run native on my machine with a I7 processes in win 10, I have a dual boot up in win 7 and win 10 both.

Win 10 is used to run pretty much everything I run, short of Tech2 win, which I use the win 7 64 boot up to run it.

So in the Win 7 dual boot up (small 40 gig partition off the drive), have tech2win to use the Nano as a Tech II, plus VM GMSI, and Tis2000 in a VM shell since I may need them as well for the VX nano running as a tech II when running in win 7.

In win 10 boot up,
VM GDS2 V17
TDS using internet explorer native with account
Vm Tis2000 built on a full XP OS with account
VM GMSI

If you want to just run a single OS system, instead of a dual boot up machine since you can’t get Tech2 win to run in win10, then you can run pretty much run everything in win 7 (32 or 64 bit), so long as you have a CPU that has multi cores. Hence you going to need to run at least VM player for the VM shells, and it take as multi core processor to run VM player (or VM workstation).
Note, I have VM workstation, instead of just VM player, since I build other VM shells to run in windows as well.

So again, it really just depends on your machine, and if you Tech2win will run correctly on it or not.
Hence the problem is when you open Tech2win, you need to get three pop up screens once Tech2win start the program.

The first screen will ask you what country, and you select north America.

The second pop up will ask you if the device is a MDI 1 or MDI 2, and you select Mdi 1.

The third pop up screen will ask you if you want to select the USB device (the nano plugged into a USB port), you select it, then it will take you to the Tech2win start screen.

So if you open Tech2win, and you don’t get the three pop up screens but just goes directly to tech2win main start screen below instead, then Tech2win is not going to work on your machines win 10 . Hence the problem is a glitch in midi and tech2 win interface to select the nano to begin with (what the pop up screens are), and if you can’t select the nano via the pop up screens, tech2win will not connect to the nano in the first place.

Again don’t know if this is a AMD verse Intel CPU problem in win 10, but the only laptops that I have seen run Tech2win in windows 10, just happened to be laptops running a AMD CPU instead. And yes, have tried to skin the cat many way with added drivers and compatibility modes, and it’s driver/code line that win 10 does not have for the intel CPU (but seems to to have for the AMD CPU that is a carry over from the win 7 days to make the AMD chip work with win 10 instead).

Small glitch running TIS200, and unless your laptop/computer has a RS232 port to plug the Tech II cable into it, your going to need an usb cable instead.

Or Here is the driver link needed for the VM XP that the TIS2000 is going to run native in and will need to be installed in the VM shell for the usb cable.

On the above link, several older OS’s are listed for the driver downloads, one being MS Vista. However in the minimum system requirements sections for the OS, Vista is not listed.

TS2000 and WIN software only runs on XP ,the drivers that are listed are for the USB to RS232 port adapter you have to by if your computer does not have a 232 port.

tech2 is being phazes out, the GM MDI as stated above will replace it fully very shortly, you can use tech2win for older vehicles, GENERALLY anything with the new style flip keys from general motors will require the MDI with GDS2 software. so those clone tech2s will be useless on both cruze’s you plan to work on. they may or may not work with the 07 silverado, depending if they have the CANDi module

You do not need the MDI interface, Cardaq has a GM dongle that is approved by GM for Tech2win and GDS 2-$500 dollar cable and a subscription to GDS 2 and you have both From www.obd2tool.com. FYI they have short term subscriptions too. Tech2win does have some issues still but should get you what you need.

HPT can only work with ECM and TCM.

Tech 2 can work with ABS, BCM, etc.

But, Tech 2 can only change/do stuff GM intended where HPT can change all kinds of tables GM wouldn’t want us messing with.

So both have pluses/minuses depending on what you want to do.

You can say that, Tech2win is a pain the the butt. It never updates security correctly for the 30 day window and that using GM computers and login info. The gm tech 2 is great for code reading, viewing data. The MDI is pretty much only used for programming but its needs on certain 10+ platforms and all 15+ to view data through GDS. All MDI functions require a GM subscription.

Here are all experience of Chinese GM Tech 2 interface for SPS programming and hardware key issues. You will get useful tips/guide. Have fun.

Confirm your card with a brand:
Before buying, you should tell your seller: Will you choose GM or SAAB or Isuzu or Opel card?
Because every card to one brand cars. If you want to do more brands, they will ask your pay extra fee for other cards.
Hope it be useful.

Can do programming:
Chinese clone Tech II don’t have hardware key but it can do programming

TIS2000 dongle & sw make it:
The TIS2000 Dongle( the newest one is USB flash type ) and the TIS 2000 software could do the SPS programming . usually the chinese gm tech 2 kit not included it . you should point it speartly that you need it very important . may be need more $100.0 for the dongle and software

Work for cars 2008 or older:
You should use the Professional Diagnostic Tool TIS200 dongle and software for reprogramming SPS and access Immo SYSTEM but just work for 2008 year or older. for new cars, you should use the MDI module programming online

MDI instead for new cars:
buy GM MDI instead as it will run tech2win and do sps flashing and also do latest model cars that tech2 won’t do

Must have TIS2000:
the Chinese GM Tech-2 can’t program, if you want to do programming you need to buy the TIS2000 software. It has the hardware key.

Works well for one year:
if you consider to buy one, I can suggest you buy it using the site https://www.obd2tool.com/goods-1568-GM+Tech2+GM+Scanner+-CANdi++TIS+(Works+for+GMSAABOPELSUZUKIISUZUHolden).html, I buy it one years ago, and it works well now, and they can supply us the technical support. I bought a Chinese OPEL TECH2 interface off obd2tool.com, from two years now and it stills working fine. If you use the right software you wont found any inconvenience …
There’s no need of drivers and Opel tech II is an Auto exec file, so it doesn’t need to install.

Both 2 units work fine:
I bought 2 units from different suppliers, both work fine, until I bought the original tech2 card from one of this suppliers It does snapshots, and programming but one of the units wont accept the card, it seems like one of the edges close to the pin connector side , is been damage well one of the problems, the main problem I think is after I use explorer manager to upload the file to the tech2 card on my laptop I did it many times with no problems it work just fine, but after that day I couldn’t it goes up to 25% and gives an error related to power , couldn’t find a card of 12v or something like that, and the other card finish fine but when when I plug to the tech2 it wont recognize the card it displays downloading mode and that it, but a clone card work fine so I use this to diagnose, ifany body knows how to do a low level format or some fix like that in order to be able to use the card again please help.

Until today I’m using tech2 clone from www.obd2tool.com it does SPS and all, still working fine I have a software emulator for dongle it works great on American NAO, Brasil, Isuzu, I do SPS on all this vehicles with no problems. just make sure you get a card for SPS, snapshots and it will work.

I can try to read but writing is sometimes danger.
power supply for akku. When I write flash, the ecu need a lot of power.

Searched a lot… thought i should rework the inner board.

Then i did something…

Tip 3: a clean Windows 7 is the best way

I will prefer you to use windows 7 for all the diagnostic devices, this is because of the security of the windows 10. The best way to get a good working diagnostic program is to have one and only laptop for this. A clean windows 7 i are the best way, but this is only my experience

odis-e,-s on same laptop, Windows x64? x86?

Tip 1: odis-e odis-s same laptop, x64 better

Both odis e and odis s can work together on same laptop partition. no problem. For newer versions will be better x64.

Tip 2: x86 much better, no lack of functionality

x86 is soooo much better since there is no any lack of the functionality for any kind of driver of ur laptop , I test both x86 is better and u can install both yes ODIS-S and ODIS-E

Tip 3: on Windows 7 x64, perfect

Works perfectly on Windows 7 x64, I have Engineering 7.2.2, Service 4.1.4 and Service 4.2.3 in same partition and no problem, if you execute any of them in Windows 10 you won’t be able to select VAS 5054A

Tip 4: on Windows 7 64bit works very well

I installed on win7 64bit and it installed and I added the update file from the download, starts and works very well, thank you all for your guidance and comments.

When the maintenance light comes on or you’ve changed the oil and filter on your Honda, the maintenance minder system will need to be reset.

Authorized Honda dealers will automatically reset your maintenance minder system as part of the service, but if you’ve changed the oil yourself or had the service performed elsewhere, you can manually reset the oil maintenance light with a few simple steps.

Here are the instructions for resetting the oil maintenance light on a 2007 or newer Honda Key Programmer.
Resetting Your Honda Oil Maintenance Light in 4 Steps

Step 1:  Turn the ignition to run (one click before starting the engine).
Step 2:  Press the Select/Reset button located on either your steering wheel or as a knob on your dash.  Depending on your model, either scroll through or press the knob repeatedly until “Engine Oil Life” or “Engine Oil Indicator %” is displayed.
Step 3:  Press and hold the Select/Reset button for 10 seconds.  The Engine Oil Indicator will begin to blink.
Step 4:  If your display reads “Engine Oil Life”, select the Reset mode by pressing the Info button on the steering wheel. Then press the Select/Reset button to return your oil life to 100%.

If your display reads “Engine Oil Indicator %”,  press and hold the Select/Reset knob for more than 5 seconds.  The oil life indicator % will change to 100%.

Your oil maintenance light is part of the Maintenance Minder system. Honda introduced the Maintenance Minder system in 2006 to help drivers know when their vehicles are due for scheduled maintenance.  The Honda Key Programmer works by determining how your Honda is being used and calculating when regular maintenance should be preformed.
What Determines the Life of My Engine Oil?

The primary factors that affect the engine oil life are engine temperature, engine load, mileage driven, trip duration, vehicle speed and engine speed.  If your engine maintenance light has come on before it’s recommended scheduled 5,000 mile oil change, the Maintenance Minder system has predicted early breakdown of the additives in your oil based on use and engine conditions.

I recently got the new 17.2 software upgrade for my Snap-On scanner, also the shop I work for got the newest Autel Maxisys Elite scanner. I had a chance to play around with them this weekend on my truck. All of this info applies to my 2008 3rd gen.

The 3rd Gen has a heavy & light load TPMS settings and the Autel accommodates both settings where the Snap-On only gives you one setting.

I set my heavy load limit to 40 PSI which should trigger the warning light at 34 PSI. Note that the adjustment limit is 28-80 PSI.

After I reset the heavy load setting, I did the same for the light load setting and this was the final result.
NOTE: 28 PSI is the lowest possible setting available for my truck, with a 22 PSI warning light trigger threshold.

Right now my tires are set to 35 PSI and I have no warning lights on. The only side effect so far is that when I push the “Light Load” button on my dashboard, the indicator light flashes and then turns off. Something is not happy with the changes I made. I’ll have to play around with it some more to see if I can get the indicator light to cooperate. All of this was accomplish without needing a dealer supplied 4 digit code. I assume thats just something required for the 4th gen trucks.
